From Strips to Splendour: Jelly Roll Joy Inside πŸͺΌπŸ—žοΈπŸ₯°

Hello, hello, it's Kirsty here from Bonjour Quilts with another weekend newsletter for you.

National Jelly Roll Day!

Did you know that Saturday, September 16th is National Jelly Roll Day? Which nation? (US, Australia?) Which Jelly Roll (the cake or the fabric?) Who cares, I love them all! πŸ˜ƒ

Jelly Rolls, for those who haven't heard the term before, refers to a bundle of 2.5" fabric strips. These strips are cut across the width of fabric (so they're 40-44" long) and you usually get at least 40 in the bundle. The strips are sold in a roll that looks a lot like the spiral of a jelly roll, hence the name. Jelly rolls are a great way to get a piece of every fabric in a collection. They're also a fantastic short cut for 2.5" sashing strips.

In honour of National Jelly Roll Day, my 3 jelly roll compatible patterns are on sale.

Just use the code: JR23 to get 25% off these patterns:

Star Sweep Quilt Pattern:

Star Sweep is jelly roll, fat quarter and scrap compatible.

Stash Knockout Quilt Pattern.

This pattern has instructions for using FQs, but can be easily adapted to use jelly rolls (and scraps).

Here's Cheryl's beautiful version with rows of blue and green (my favourite colours πŸ’™ πŸ’š).

And here's Terry's tropical version, with lush greens and delightful pinks:

Window Panes Quilt Pattern.

This pattern has instructions for using fat quarters, but is also perfect for jelly rolls, F8s, partial FQs - basically any scraps you need to use up. It's a really good one for using up all those orphan jelly roll strips you might've accumulated.

Here's Megan's twin size in gorgeous plummy purples (with a lovely pop of complementary green):

And Debbie's version makes clever use of all the 'end of the jelly roll' leftovers from various fabric lines:

So if you have some jelly rolls gathering dust in your cupboard, maybe one of these patterns will convince you to put them to use this National Jelly Roll Day!

And if you don't have a jelly roll, have no fear. The Fat Quarter Shop has 20% off all jelly rolls this weekend (ends Monday). Just use the same code (JR23) at checkout to get 20% off any jelly rolls that catch your eye (including Halloween and Christmas jelly rolls πŸŽ‰).

Interesting Links around the Interwebs

Some very crafty stone layouts that might give you some (free motion) quilting pattern inspiration as well.

Given my love of miniatures, I was so happy to stumble across this Instagram account.

Some beautiful mandalas that also gave me some fun colour palette ideas.

If you're also a garment sewist, you might find this article on how to sew pockets in anything interesting.

Reader Quilts

My favourite part of the newsletter! I love seeing the gorgeous quilts you've made from Bonjour Quilts patterns. Keep sending in your photos (just hit reply to this email) or tag me on Instagram or Facebook.

Tina's The Plus Side quilt has tons of saturated colour and some very cool self-drafted borders:

Sarah's getting into her scrap pile and has sewed up this very pretty Scrap Magnet block:

Joan created this fabulous When You Wish...baby mat:

Check out this amazing gift Krystyna made for her adult niece using the Skull Quilt Block tutorial.

Here's a seascape Diamonds in the Deep quilt, beautifully made by Marion:

I always enjoy seeing how people's fabric choices change the way a pattern looks. Here are two versions of the Scrappy Lattice quilt. The first is Trish's beautiful version with a repeating pattern and added borders:

And here's Wendy's version with a scrappy diagonal layout. I love that these two quilts, which look so different, are made from the same pattern!

Keep the photos coming, dear readers! It makes my day to see these patterns come to life with your hands, and I know fellow newsletter readers love seeing these patterns made up in different fabrics. Keep sending them in (just hit reply)!

What's Happening at Chez Bonjour

More lovely Spring weather here in our corner of Queensland.

Our neighbour Alan celebrates his 100th birthday today - I can hear the party next door as I'm typing. Al's daughter just dropped some cake over to us and confirmed that he'd received his congratulatory letters from the State Premier, the Prime Minister of Australia and His Majesty the King. (It still feels weird to write that, RIP QEII.) Hope he doesn't have too bad a hangover tomorrow! πŸ˜ƒ

The cats say hi. And zzzzz.

It's a hard life! Here they are on a navy/teal and white Mountainside quilt:

And here they are on a red version of the Diamonds in the Deep quilt.

Have a wonderful weekend and remember to give your jelly rolls some love! πŸ˜ƒ

Until next time,

Kirsty x

P.S. Don't forget, you can get 25% off the Star Sweep, Stash Knockout or Window Panes patterns this weekend for National Jelly Roll Day - use code JR23.

P.P.S. Fat Quarter Shop has 20% off jelly rolls until midnight Monday, also using code JR23.

Bags of colourful quilting scrap fabrics

Hello, hello, it's Kirsty here from Bonjour Quilts with another weekend newsletter for you. What I'm Sewing... I've almost finished my green and low-volume scrap quilt top - very appropriate given The Modern Quilt Guild tells me that today (Nov 4) is International Scrap Sorting Day. Sounds good to me! I keep my scraps in clear bags in a cupboard, and I love having them pre-sorted and on hand. I'm sure there are a million ways different people define a scrap, but mine all have to be smaller...

Hello, hello, it's Kirsty here from Bonjour Quilts with another weekend newsletter for you. What I'm Sewing... I finally finished my throw size Halloween quilt, yay! I was planning to send it off to the longarmer but I realised with a two-week turn around, half of October would be gone before I got it back. So I made the scary decision...to quilt it myself. Let's just say it wasn't the most fun I've had quilting! But you can read all about it in this new blog post, with plenty of photos. The...
